About the Louvre Abu Dhabi
A Universal Museum – The Origin of Louvre Abu Dhabi
The idea of Louvre Abu Dhabi was first conceived back in 2007 when the French government and the United Arab Emirates teamed up to create a universal museum that would use works of art to tell the story of the world. The two governments embraced the challenges associated with this huge project. The massive Louvre (64,000 square meters) that resembles the Paris Louvre is built of immaculate white museum city houses one-of-a-kind paintings, sculptures, and other works of art that were sourced with the assistance of the Agence France Museums.
Nouvel, the designer behind the structure, described Louvre Abu Dhabi as a welcoming world serenely combining light and shadow, reflection and calm. The museum also seeks to be part of a nation, its history, and its geography and attempts to emphasize how exciting unexpected meetings may be. Louvre Abu Dhabi is the largest art and culture museum in the Arab world and was created to showcase the parallels that cut across ages and traditions in diverse cultures. The multiracial museum will be known as the Louvre for thirty years, and its distinctive, ever-expanding collection comprises both original works from the Middle East and antiques from across the world.
Louvre Abu Dhabi Architecture
The Louvre Abu Dhabi was conceived by Jean Nouvel, a Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, and was officially opened on November 8, 2017. Nouvel drew inspiration from Saadiyat, a stunning flawless lagoon island in Abu Dhabi, as he designed a façade that wonderfully complements the chronological tour of the world and accurately reflects the Louvre Abu Dhabi collection. All 55 buildings in the museum are covered by a latticed dome made of steel. The dome resembles the Mashrabiya, a classic Middle-Eastern sunshade.
Sunlight seeps through the many stars stenciled inside the dome, creating a lovely mood everywhere you turn in the museum. The museum is an outstanding architectural achievement and, at the same time, a cultural institution founded on values that encourage respect, curiosity, learning, and self-reflection.
Below is the Louvre Abu Dhabi's visitor guide, including what to view and how to purchase tickets.
